How to File Your Homestead Exemption in Fort Bend County, Texas: 2026 Guide

If you recently purchased a primary residence in Sugar Land, Missouri City, Richmond, Rosenberg, Fulshear, Stafford, Needville, Katy or another Fort Bend County community, one of your first post-closing tasks should be filing your residence homestead exemption.

The process is handled through the Fort Bend Central Appraisal District, or FBCAD.

Make Sure Your Property Is Actually in Fort Bend County

This is particularly important around Houston.

A Katy mailing address, for example, doesn’t automatically mean Harris County. Properties around the Houston metro can fall within several counties.

If your property isn’t in Fort Bend County, I’ve created separate filing guides for:

Harris County

Fort Bend County

Montgomery County

How Much Is the Homestead Exemption?

For 2026, Texas school districts provide qualifying homeowners with a $140,000 general residence homestead exemption.

Additional exemptions can apply depending on the city, county, school district and special districts associated with your property.

This is especially important in Fort Bend County, where two homes with similar prices can have very different tax structures.
